Happy World Poetry Day!

I’d be lying if I said I knew that was even a thing until half an hour ago but what a great excuse to go about writing my first real blog post here.

Admittedly, I have no idea where to go with this. I’ve had a couple other blog posts in the works but they don’t seem broad enough to be shelved under World Poetry Day. I guess I’ll keep it simple.

Poetry is important. So, so important. Read some poetry today. Maybe you’ve got a favorite poet you want to revisit, maybe there’s a poet whose work you haven’t quite gotten around to yet. Or maybe you never read poetry! Maybe you dismissed it in high school, as so many of my close friends have done. In that case: read some poetry today! Step outside your comfort zone. Learn to revel in the confusion and frustration. Read the poem 20 times. Read it outloud. Read it to a friend or a lover or an ex (?). Call a relative and read it to them.

Then, if you’ve got a moment, write a poem or three. Write in the style of whoever you were reading today, or write in your own style if you feel confident enough. Just, write.
